UV LAMP & REFLECTOR MAINTENANCE & CLEANING

THE IMPORTANCE OF LAMP CLEANING

Lamps and reflectors must be clean at the time of installation and kept in good condition so UV energy generated can reach the ink, coating or adhesive.

As the UV reactor is an optical system, all types of dust, powder, grease, smoke and misting ink must be cleaned from lamps and reflectors especially if other operations, such as running a press with powder, are in the same area. Electrical fittings must also be cleaned to prevent arcing between the fitting and lamp ends. Dirty reflectors will reduce cure rates and increase temperature. Approximately 50-60% of lamp energy is returned by the reflectors. Overheating, from dirty conditions, can result in warping, possibly reducing electrical spacing, and cause a short of the arc to ground.

By using the Lamp and Reflector Maintenance Kit, you can clean lamps and reflectors to ensure maximum energy efficiency. Each item in this kit quickly removes dust and other foreign particulate without leaving a residue. Never use steel wool, emery paper, or abrasive powders for cleaning lamps or reflectors.G

MERCURY CLEANUP KIT

Mercury is one of the most toxic chemicals in our environment. It evaporates at room temperature, producing an invisible, tasteless, odorless, and extremely dangerous vapor. Mercury will continue to emit toxic mercury vapor for years when left unattended. Be prepared with the CON-TROL-CURE™ Mercury Lamp Cleanup Kit which answers the need for safe disposal of mercury when lamps shatter.

Merconvap, the kit's primary element, is a formulation made of propylene glycol, sulfates, iodine, soluble copper, and other chemical compounds. Merconvap is 100% effective as a mercury suppressant and decontaminate. On contact with mercury or mercury-rich waste, it immediately inhibits mercury vapor emission into air and water. It prevents methylation of mercury in water. Completely biodegradable.

The kit consists of:
• 2 Mercontainers, made of plastic with a Merconvap-charged urethane sponge liner to safely store mercury-rich wastes (16 oz).
• 1 Merconspray for removing toxic mercury vapor from the air in seconds. Also excellent for spill clean-up in closed areas and for hard surface decontamination (8 oz).
• 1 Merconvap Liquid for decontaminating floors, walls, countertops, and other hard surfaces. Ideal for floor cracks and hard-to-reach areas (16 oz).
• 1 container of Merconwipe towelettes, precharged with Merconvap concentrate, cleans countertops, hands and equipment. A pop-up dispenser makes it easy to use. Contains cleansing and decontamination agents (160/container).

The CON-TROL-CURE™ Mercury Lamp Cleanup Kit has a shelf life of approximately 2 years.

CLEANING KIT LAMP AND REFLECTOR

Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure your UV system continues to deliver maximum UV output. This kit includes everything required to clean UV lamps and reflectors: cleaning fluid, wiper pads, cotton gloves, and maintenance information.

Cleaning Fluid: Lamp and reflector deterioration can be accelerated by dust, dirt, and fingerprints accumulated from poor cleaning or improper handling. To ensure optimal performance, lamps and reflectors should be cleaned before operation. This solution cleans the quartz sleeve and aluminum reflector without leaving behind residue.

Lint-Free Wipes: These conveniently sized cotton Webril® 4” x 4”
pads are 100% non-woven material will not contaminate cleaning fluid or scratch surfaces. 100/box.

Cotton Gloves: 100% cotton gloves prevent fingerprints from damaging lamp performance. Once a lamp is energized, prints and dust become etched into quartz sleeve and reduce UV output to unwanted infrared.

CLEANING SOLUTION LAMP AND REFLECTOR

During production, various deposits accumulate on the lamp and reflector surfaces. These deposits prevent the uniform delivery of UV light to the product. The reflector supplies as much as 70 percent of the UV that reaches the curing surface. The other 30 percent is emitted directly from the bulb itself; yet more time is spent discussing when to replace the bulb than reflector maintenance. Gauges such as hour meters and amp meters give you information about the power supplied to the lamp and how long that power has been applied, but they tell you very little about the UV energy that performs the bulk of the curing, which is reflected energy.

UV irradiators attract dust and fumes that are given off as the curing product passes through the intense UV and thermal environment. These impurities gather on the reflector, causing it to become less efficient. The UV portion of the light spectrum is much more difficult to reflect to begin with than visible light. As the reflector becomes dull, the UV wavelengths tend to be lost, even while the visible light looks as bright as ever. Generally speaking, the shorter the wavelength, the sooner its intensity drops off. If you have a means of measuring the various UV wavelengths separately, you will be aware of deterioration in the shorter wavelengths first. As the short-wave UV drops off in relation to the longer wavelengths, you will foretell the need to clean the system earlier than if you just monitor the longer wavelengths.

CON-TROL-CURE Lamp and Reflector Cleaning Solution cleans lamps and reflectors and does not leave behind any organic residue which can reduce optimum light transmission. Also available in convenient aerosol dispenser. Formulated specifically for safe use on UV lamps.

Custom Flex Circuit Abrader

We had an unusual request for blasting the back of flex circuits to improve the laser solderability of the parts. The backing was too reflective and meant that the laser welds were not always consistent. A custom machine was built to create a uniform area over the back of the area that is soldered. This means that the area would not reflect the laser and improve the efficiency of the weld.
